Streaming on HULU, this doc by Questlove is damn near perfection in capturing
the magic (and majesty) of Sly & The Family Stone and their incredible entry into
the music scene in a cultural time when LOTS of incredible entrances were going
on. Few were as long term influential and lasting. Sly Stone's musical genius and
engagingly intelligent personality were a huge part of their success, and it WAS a
"they", at least initially.
That things eventually turned to well known and heart breaking shit is handled with
a lot of empathy and love after a certain point, but the main emphasis of this incredibly
well done doc is on the power and glory of the music that was created, and it gets celebrated
and lovingly dissected by some very smart and wise fans.
Overall great stuff, great music, well done and put together with the love and respect that
Sly Stone deserves after all these years. Questlove has made another classic music documentary
for the ages.
