With Phil Lynott's blessing, John Sykes left Thin Lizzy, and joined Whitesnake. But just as Whitesnake's blockbuster eponymous album was being finished, David Coverdale fired everyone, including Sykes. This (a) left Sykes bitter, and (b) probably prevented him from achieving greater fame.
Sykes would then form Blue Murder. My future wife was still in high school, when she liked Blue Murder's "Jelly Roll." "Jelly Roll" remains not just one of her favorites, but a favorite of many hard rock fans. It still doesn't get much airplay or recognition, which makes it that much more special, for those who know.
