45 years ago, the first new #1 song in America was KC & The Sunshine Band's "Please Don't Go." As a slow song, we kids did not know what to make of it. But my babysitter, Christina, loved it. Even though she did not have a boyfriend, the song made it feel as though she did, and was losing him. She lit candles, while listening to "Please Don't Go."
But at least here in the Bay Area, for the rest of the 1980s, we hardly ever heard "Please Don't Go."
And then, when we were in college in the early-1990s, pop culture from the 70s came back. And that included KC & The Sunshine Band. My dormmie, Andrea, had heard "Please Don't Go" on some lite rock FM station, and felt inspired to sing it in our dorm shower! She and I had to remember (and make up!) the lyrics.
Nowadays, most universities' Student Housing bans indoor flames. If you live at home, or off-campus, you can risk lighting candles. Candles or not, my wife and daughter like KC & The Sunshine Band's "Please Don't Go." When my wife and I saw them in Las Vegas during the early-2000s, they did not perform "Please Don't Go."
