Lisa Loeb, "Would You Wander"

In 1994, Lisa Loeb had an out-of-nowhere #1 hit, with "Stay (I Missed You)." It came from the movie, Reality Bites, while Loeb was not signed to a major label. When that song was in development, Loeb thought it'd be something good for Daryl Hall.

20 years ago, my wife had a week-long business trip to Los Angeles. She was helping one of the El Segundo offices to analyze holiday sales.

When she and I got to the hotel, nobody was there. The next morning, during continental breakfast, we sat near three auditors from a Big 4 firm. One of them guessed that the hotel was empty, because the holidays were over, and it wasn't quite deep enough into the new year, for conferences. A second auditor suggested that vacationers were not in L.A.; rather they were in San Diego or Phoenix.

In our hotel room, my wife was flicking through the TV channels. At the end were the music channels. One of which played something new to us: Lisa Loeb's "Would You Wander." My wife had a long midday break, so we went down to the pool/hot tub. We were the only ones.

My wife made a comment about Lisa Loeb, and then took off her bikini. Not to worry; while in the hot tub, you could see if anyone was coming. In addition, my wife kept towels within immediate reach, just in case anyone did come. No one did.

My wife and I have never heard Loeb's "Would You Wander" on a radio station. Were it not for the cable TV's music channels, we would not have known about it. Apparently, "Would You Wander" was from a 2004 album called The Way It Really Is, which did garner some decent reviews. The mature folk/pop of "Would You Wander" was never meant to be well-known. But that kind of makes it a favorite of a few stray audiophiles.
