Ah, San Francisco's Castro. At the end of 1989, there used to be an audio store called Eber Electronic, on Market & Castro. I went with my dad, and brought along the then-new Savatage CD, Gutter Ballet. "When The Crowds Are Gone" convinced me to pool monies I had saved from birthdays and Christmases, and buy a Sony TA-E1000ESD preamp. This was (a) my first "separate," and (b) my last mid-fi purchase. All electronics after this was from "high-end audio."
Sorry about the warped scan. My friend misses the access to musical instruments, while we were in college. She used to do piano drills. But when listening to "When The Crowds Are Gone," she joked, "They never had any crowds to begin with!" Ouch.
She then said she liked "When The Crowds Are Gone," and remarked, "Nothing against the lead singer [Jon Oliva], but this would sound even better, if a woman sang it."
Interestingly, sometimes the Trans-Siberia orchestra performs "When The Crowds Are Gone," and occasionally uses a female singer.
