The Drifters, "Under The Boardwalk"

When the Drifters came out with "Under The Boardwalk" in 1964, (a) UC Santa Cruz had not yet opened, and (b) we were still years away from being born.

During the 1992-9 school year, this was my UCSC apartment. We often left the Adcom GTP-400 tuned to a Central CA coast "Oldies" radio station. To its credit, it did not over play "Under The Boardwalk."

At the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, we squeamishly cringed, at the thought of people making love under the boardwalk. But back on campus, "Under The Boardwalk" gave us sunny visions of the Boardwalk. One of my friends then remarked that most of the U.S. did not have a boardwalk.
