35 years ago, the Loma Prieta earthquake may not have eliminated Santa Cruz's businesses, but temporarily suspended them. The Boardwalk remained open, but as college kids, we had no money. So we just walked through, took in the sights.

The mouth of the San Lorenzo River ends near the Boardwalk. So we went up the river, in the Henry Cowell Redwoods. We came to a river bank with lots of tiny black pebbles. About "Overkill's "Elimination," my friend said, "This song rocks!"

There's that silent undercurrent of rock music audiophiles, who can't stand the resident SAs. It's material like Overkill's "Elimination," which pumps these audiophiles up. And of course, this prompted Pantera to hire Producer Terry Date, to craft the sound on Cowboys From Hell.
