"You want us to go without shaving for a whole month?!"
35 years ago, my dorm's RA, Genevieve, teamed up with an RA, Jason, from a dorm in the other quad. They wanted to know if everyone wanted to participate in a so-called "No-Shave November." The thought was, since the weather in the Northern Hemisphere was getting colder, why not just let the hair grow, for the month of November?
So guys were not supposed to shave their facial hair, and gals were not supposed to shave their armpits and legs.
A freckle-faced sophomore in my dorm had already participated in a No-Shave November the prior year. Elton John's "Sacrifice" played, and she said that she had just shaved her legs and armpits, and was ready to hold out for a month.
She said that, almost immediately, armpit stubble would grow. However, her armpit hair would only grow so far, and not get any longer.
Those of us from the Bay Area were stunned, that Chris Isaak, who was then living in San Francisco, appeared in the video for "Sacrifice." Isaak's character splits with his wife, and he is left to raise their young daughter.
As 1989 was coming to an end, Adult Contemporary was strong. Little did we now then, that when the calendar flipped to 1990, alt-rock would take over. Nevertheless, EJ's "Sacrifice" has weathered the 35 years since, and remains a beloved AC hit.
And as far as my UCSC dormmies went, since many were wannabe hippies, quite a few didn't shave to begin with. Even after November 1989 came to an end, many continued not to shave.
