10 years ago, while working at a public high school, I had two colleagues who were also alums of my alma mater, UC Santa Cruz. Since I graduated in 1993, I always missed Santa Cruz, always wanted to go back. So, having colleagues, who were fellow Banana Slugs, gave further incentive, motivation, and encouragement, to make return visits.
Our students tended to like rap and hip hop. But our staff, who were mostly Gen X and Millennials, liked college rock. And one of our college rock influences, Toad The Wet Sprocket, had a new album, New Constellation. They certainly sounded in character, but some of the material was, dare we say it, less down and pessimistic. One such track was "I'll Bet On You."
And one of my colleagues (who was not a UCSC alumna) found the video games too overwhelming.
After listening to "I'll Bet On You" some more, we realized that Santa Cruz had plenty more eateries, than ever before. And in a way, maybe our generation was lucky, that we did not have so many "distractions!" But there was something reassuring, about TTWS coming out with "I'll Bet On You." We somehow felt like we grew up, and were passing through adulthood, together.
