In the latter half of 1993, my friends and I went on our first road trips, without parents/adults, from our homes in the Bay Area, down to SoCal. Initially, we took I-5 both ways. After those first couple of trips, we still took I-5 south. But on the way back, we took Highway 101. Not only was that a nicer ride, we got to visit friends at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly SLO.
When we got to San Luis Obispo, hearing Robert Plant's version of "If I Were A Carpenter" felt good. But it also made me lament that he hadn't come out with that, while I was at UC Santa Cruz (1989-93). Damn, I wish I had the skills of a carpenter! Eventually, I ended up in finance and education. Nevertheless, Plant's version of "If I Were A Carpenter" still tugs on heartstrings.
