After graduating from Presidio Middle School, most of my schoolmates simply went across the street, to Washington High (above). But I went to Lowell, whose dances were massive. So much so, those dances drew attendees from not just within San Francisco, but just outside as well.
Anyway, although everyone was preparing for Winterball, my school still had one more regular dance. From Wash, my friends Emily and Renee attended. And they remember being in the gym, and being hypnotized by Sade's "Nothing Can Come Between Us."
35 years later, my friends still hate wearing heels. But they are still amazed by how "Nothing Can Come Between Us" sounds. Back in '88, none of us had boyfriends or girlfriends. Yet, "Nothing Can Come Between Us" made it feel like you and your partner were strong. Or, at the dance, "Nothing Can Come Between Us" allowed you to "dance" with your friend, even though there wasn't anything remotely romantic between your. But that's the power of the music.
While recently swaying to "Nothing Can Come Between Us," Emily wondered whatever happened to Renee. Alums seem to have lost contact with her.
