In late 1988, when my friend Janet spoke, she sounded like a cat being strangled. Yet, when she sang, her voice was fine and even beautiful. One day after school, we walked over to the Stonestown Tower Records. Since we had liked Level 42's 1987 album, Running in The Family, Janet bought their new CD, Staring At The Sun. Yes, we knew that you needed protective eyewear, if you were going to look at the sun.
We then took the M-Oceanview street car, to Forest Hill station. Janet lived a short walk from Laguna Honda and Portola. Staring At The Sun was kind of disappointing, but Janet and I did like "Heaven In My Hands." It was the kind of sophisti-pop, which made you feel a little more, well, sophisticated than Top 40. And now, 35 years later, you use it to see how spritely an audio system sounds.
