A-ha, "You Are The One"

"Weak!" yelled my friend Little Timmy.

Growing up in the 80s, we never seemed to have enough friends, to play team sports. In 1987, as high school demands and academics increased, more and more of my male friends stopped coming out to play sports. Those of us remaining desperately wanted to continue. In order to do so, we needed bodies, and could only recruit a few nerd girls.

When playing sports, Little Timmy, who looked like Milhouse from The Simpsons, always got targeted and picked on. So when the nerd girls were even smaller than he was, he felt like the opponents couldn't target him as often. Still, he wished that our girls were bigger, stronger, faster, and would often rib them, for being "weak."

We'd take a breather, and fire up the boombox. 35 years ago, during the Fall 1988 semester, the nerd girls liked A-ha's "You Are The One." A song like that caused Little Timmy to inquire about the nerd girls' class schedules. If he had the same free periods, he'd seek and hang out with those girls. When the music video for "You Are The One" came out, Little Timmy thought that the song was "candy ass." But when he listened to the CD, he discovered that the sonics were much stronger there.

Although Little Timmy personally preferred music a little tougher, A-ha's "You Are The One" made him consider asking the nerd girls to go to dances, and even the Winterball.
