The 5th Dimension's version of "Stoned Soul Picnic" is now 55 years-old. Yes, it's older than we are, but our parents listened to it for years. The neighborhood kids and I didn't know what a "stoned soul picnic" was, but the song was part of our upbringing, past, and psyche.

In 1992-93, my senior year at UCSC, an Adcom GTP-400's tuner could bring in a Central CA coast "Oldies" station. It would periodically play the 5th Dimension's "Stoned Soul Picnic." By then, we just assumed that it meant a friendly gathering of stoners, listening to music. So, with or without picnic food, we walked down to the campus' Great Meadow.

"Stoned Soul Picnic" is actually a Laura Nyro song. Regardless of artist, "Stoned Soul Picnic" just isn't commercially played, here in the Bay Area.
