35 years ago, some of my friends lived in cramped quarters, in San Francisco's Chinatown. When I'd go over to their homes, no wonder they (a) stayed on campus after school, (b) went to public libraries, and (c) came out to play sports. With so little space at home, they really only stayed to eat, sleep, and help their families.
Only a few of my friends had bedroom windows, which faced the street. Nevertheless, when they listened to Bruce Hornsby and the Range's "Look Out Any Window," my friends felt (a) that their world got a little more open, and (b) a little more adult. They would parlay academic excellence into good jobs.
Bay Area radio stations still occasionally play "Look Out Any Window." We look out of our car, home, office, and restaurant windows, and wonder where the past 35 years have gone. Seems like yesterday, when my future wife, who lived in Ping Yuen, couldn't find a place to practice violin, without bothering people.
