"Your friends aren't ugly," said my classmate Seth, back in 1988, "But they aren't pretty, either."
While Seth lumped all of my friends, including Magdalena (above) together, we latched on to local Bay Area rock band, Death Angel. They consisted of cousins, who were just slightly older than we were. Since my friends were in an academically-demanding high school, we certainly were not bored, but Death Angel's "Bored" was an underground hit.
Trying to break from the "she's plain-looking" pigeon-hole, Magdalena ditched her glasses, and went to contacts. We used makeup, to thicken her eyebrows, pencil in the eyeliner, and apply some lipstick.
Magdalena had relatives, who lived in Daly City. Some were Filipino, so we took great pride, in Death Angel being ethnically Filipino.
