If we had photos from 1988-89, a shot of the Embarcadero would have shown the elevated freeway. Anyway, 35 years ago, some of my friends lived in Chinatown. So we'd walk to the Broadway Pier, where the Exploratorium now resides. A harbinger of things to come, we'd see a few stray homeless.
In church, one of the priests lectured that the homeless were people, too. They were also god's children, and we should treat them as such.
Sorry, we don't have any photos from 88-89. So this of when we were moms will have to suffice. Back in 88-89, the Presidio still belonged to the U.S. Army. So unless you had friends or relatives living in the Presidio, you stuck to the roads.
With the Army's presence, the Presidio thus did not have many homeless. Anthrax's "Who Cares Wins," one of our favorites, depicted the plight of the homeless. In early 1989, it would combine with Phil Collins' "Another Day In Paradise," to bring attention to the homeless.
