30 years ago, in the heat of Indian Summer, my friend Scylla was already a month into her junior year at UC Berkeley. Our friends Jayne and Kaye were about to go off to Davis and Santa Barbara, respectively. So we got together one last time.

We heard Billy Joel's "Famous Last Words," which was the last track on his then-new album, River Of Dreams. We did not know then that that would be Joel's last popular music album. Along with "Shades Of Gray," "Famous Last Words" was inexplicably not released as a single. Be that as it may, in some ways, "Famous Last Words" is also Joel's "last" song. 30 years and counting, it remains a favorite of ours...
