35 years ago, we were in high school, and entering San Francisco's Financial District could be intimidating. Never mind that some of us lived in high-crime neighborhoods; all those adults in FiDi were scary. But you know what? Adult Contemporary music felt right at home, in the FiDi. And, as the 1988-89 school year started, AC added Natalie Cole's R&B solo version of "When I Fall In Love."
Some of my friends lived in North Beach and Chinatown. So in order to get to school, they had to traverse FiDi, north to south. That would lead to us going to Ultimate Sound, which (a) was located in the "dungeon" of the Sherman Clay building on Kearny, (b) thus had no radio reception down there, and (c) specialized in entry-level (not $$$$) high-end audio.
In 1996, Natalie Cole would do a "duet" of "When I Fall In Love," with her late father, Nat King Cole.
