Robert Plant, "Ship Of Fools"

35 years ago, as the 1988-89 school year began, a dad drove his daughter, a friend, and me across the Golden Gate Bridge, to Marin County. While we were in the car, sone radio station played Robert Plant's then-new "Ship Of Fools." We kept waiting for that song to build, and then take off. It never did.

The dad, who knew a few Led Zeppelin songs, said something like, "The European explorers may not have been on a ship of fools, but I can see why they'd sail up and down California, and miss the Bay." He also said that, while the American Revolution was taking place, Junipero Serra and his men were juuuust getting the California missions established. "Shoot," said the dad, "If I were JS, no matter how nice Spain was, I'd sure as hell just want to stay in San Diego or Monterey. And it'd be even better, if he got to listen to bluesy and folksy rock, like Led Zep and Robert Plant."

"Ship Of Fools" was no "Going To California," but in that moment, being on the west coast just felt oh so right.
