When the Spring 1988 semester wound down, you stayed in your room, while Brenda K. Starr's "I Still Believe" played. And you dreamed - no, you knew - that someday soon, you'd be back with your boyfriend.

Oops. But as a high school girl, you never had a boyfriend, to begin with. Nevertheless, the music tugged at your heart.

As August 1988 wound down, Hawaii's schools had started. I was at a cousin's house. His family was having a back-to-school party. There were a couple of girls from Punahou's high school (where I had taken summer school classes, but not with these two), Shawna and someone whose name escapes me. Shawna and the girl engaged me, and then Brenda K. Starr's "What You See Is What You Get" played. Oh man, what joy, to dance (and I use that word loosely), while sandwiched between Shawna and the girlfriend. I begged my parents to let me stay in Honolulu, and go to Punahou.

In the following days, I flew back to San Francisco, where my senior year started. A soon as I woke up the following morning, my few guy friends called, welcoming me back, and asking to go out (to play sports), before our school year started. Little did I know that my life was about to change. Since we didn't have enough guys, to play those team sports, we let the girls do some recruiting, and they nabbed some new-to-me nerd girls. And as you know, the latter would become our future dates, girlfriends, and wives.

While Brenda K. Starr's "What You See Is What You Get" was a bigger hit with the popular kids, the nerd girls also liked it. Hahaha, my wife has seen my relatives (now her in-laws) who live in Hawaii, and has, for 35 years, maintained that Punahou's girls were more tan, friendly, athletic, and good-looking than the S.F. nerd girls.
