Audiophiles love to write to me about their college experiences in the 1970s. A common theme is that there weren't too many females. And of the females, hardly any were ethnically Chinese.
Uh oh. In summer 1988, Cyndi Lauper came out with "Hole In My Heart (All The Way To China)." And geeky guys would dedicate it to Chinese-American girls.
Although years before "Hole In My Heart (All The Way To China)," one of my audiophile acquaintances went to an HBCU, where one of his lab partners was a Chinese girl, actually from Beijing. He writes, "Man, you were just a baby, when I was in college, so I'm not going to ask Where the hell were you?, but I wish someone had written like you back then."
He continues, "Man, 'Hole In My Heart (All The Way To China)' isn't that good. No wonder no one knows about it."
