In late summer 1988, we were in Honolulu. Once that powerful sun comes up, you can't sleep. So one morning, even though we wanted breakfast in bed, we went to Leonard's Bakery. They had breakfast pastries and even a donut or two. The malasadas came out a little later.
We were staying at my late grandparents' house. My uncle lived in the unit next door. He had cable TV. MTV aired UB40 & Chrissie Hynde's "Breakfast In Bed," but we were already up. We went bodyboarding. Afterward, we went to Rainbow Drive-In for plate lunch, and then to Leonard's for malasadas. It was here, that I determined that the filling was unnecessary. Save money, and just get the plain malasadas.
So whenever I hear UB40's "Breakfast In Bed," I think back to late summer 1988, going to Leonard's twice in one day. Sweet.
