Savatage, "Sirens"

No, we don't have any photos from 1983. But when Savatage came out with "Sirens" in 1983, we were in junior high. I myself was at Presidio Middle School, not far from San Francisco's Ocean Beach (above). Male or female, most of my schoolmates were elf-sized, kind of like the album cover of Sirens.

At the time, we thought of sirens as alarms. But ah, combine Savatage's "Sirens" with Dungeons & Dragons, and we learned that a siren is a mythological creature which uses singing to allure sailors. When the lyrics went "Deserted beach just beyond their reach. You're approaching the island of the Sirens," we looked west, and tried to picture the Farallon islands. One of my classmates looked the other way, into the Bay, and went, "Nah, the only sirens on Alcatraz are the alarms and fog horns."
