The Fixx, "Saved By Zero"

Sorry, we don't have photos from 1983. But during the summer of 1983, I stayed with my grandparents in Honolulu. Once the sun started going down, my brother, cousins, and i would get restless.

As a treat, our parents, uncles, and aunts occasionally took us to an arcade chain called Fun Factory. There, we overheard The Fixx's "Saved By Zero." It came from, appropriately enough, an album called Reach The Beach. We did not know what the heck "Saved By Zero" was about. It turned out that The Fixx's lead singer, Cy Curnin, was practicing Buddhism. And so, giving up stuff, and going back to zero, could be cleansing.

At the sane time, I was taking Summer Sports at Punahou School. One of the coaches said that "Being at zero doesn't sound all that good. But it's better than being in the negative!" And that was actually a good life lesson.

While "Saved By Zero" did get radio airplay, the music video cemented it as a 1980s staple.
