We can't "go back" to 1963, if we were not yet born. But 1963 was when Dick Dale came out with the all-over-the-place King Of The Surf Guitar. It included an instrumental, "Mexico," which was highly-appropriate for us Californians.
In 1993, I took American Popular Music at UC Santa Cruz. The professor had us listen to Dick Dale, and on "Mexico," he told us to pay attention to the tone, picking, and rhythms. He pointed out that such riffing, when combined with punk influence, would form the basis of 1980s thrash metal.
I would then drive down Highway 101, and finally see the Pacific Ocean around Pismo Beach. I picked up my friends Angela, Candace, and Tanya, who, at the time, attended UC Santa Barbara. No, we did not go to Mexico, but we did lie out on San Diego beaches (years, that is my foot on the right), where we could watch a few surfers (waves were kinda flat, during that spring visit).
