In the late-90s, my friend Sau Lai worked somewhere not too far from the San Francisco Costco, near the 101/80 split. Her boyfriend (now husband) lived in the South Bay and worked for HP. Since his clients were international, he was granted permission to work from anywhere. So, he bought a new house in Brentwood. Even after fees, the cost was under $300k. The thought was that he'd be closer to family in Sacramento, but not so close, that they'd come over all the time.
From Brentwood, Sau Lai had to drive to Pittsburg/Bay Point BART, and go all the way to, I believe, 16th & Mission station. Her parents lived near S.F. General Hospital, so after she got married, Sau Lai and her husband would spend a couple midweek nights there.
As S.F. residents moved to the East Bay, East Bay residents then moved to Pacheco, Antioch, and Brentwood. Brentwood still has some farms, but they are now buttressed by housing developments.
