35 years ago, in the summer of 1988, my friends/classmates lived in San Francisco. Even so, we did not immediately hear about Boz Scaggs' comeback album, Other Roads. We hadn't heard from him since 1980, and only knew he was alive, because he owned the SOMA nightclub, Slim's.
We went to the iconic Tower Records, which used to be on Jones & Columbus. There, my friend from homeroom, Andy, bought Other Roads. We liked "Claudia," to which Andy pointed out that, in our core group of friends, we did not have anyone named Claudia. In fact, in our school of 2,600, we didn't have too many named Claudia.
At the end of 1988, Boz Scaggs' "Heart Of Mine" tugged at our hearts, and caused us to reflect upon our crushes. But "Claudia" is one of those deep album cuts, meant to be enjoyed when you are by yourself. And that lends itself nicely to audiophiles.
