In the summer of 1988, Jimmy Page, the former Led Zeppelin guitarist, came out with a new album, Outrider. We liked an instrumental track, "Emerald Eyes," which made us want to explore more of the California coast. Alas, we were in high school, and weren't exactly mobile.

Above, my friend Ruby (no, we did not know anyone named Emerald) hopped on her skateboard. As much as Page's "Emerald Eyes" tried to lure us to the beaches, there was no way we could, without a car or drivers license, get down to Pacifica. And no, most of my friends had brown, not emerald, eyes.
