30 years ago, we hit the coast, which enabled us to talk about the music. We discussed Run-DMC's "Down With The King." Although it became their second-biggest hit, behind "Walk This Way," it seemed overshadowed by all of the hip hop exploding up and down the coasts (both east and west). At this point in time, Run-DMC seemed kind of "yesteryear" or past their prime.
At the time, San Francisco's Ultimate Sound was still in the "dungeon" basement of the Sherman Clay Building. They were trying to sell their demo Conrad-Johnson CD player. But when playing back Run-DMC's "Down With The King," that unit seemed to dull or roll-off the treble.
