30 years ago, some of my fellow senior UCSC friends were at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The chocolate-dipped banana was better in thought and theory, than in practice.
Some of us got back to the Pacific Avenue Mall, when I stopped dead in my tracks. A book/record store had a new album from San Francisco's Chris Isaak. Worse, it was called San Francisco Days. My friend CC2 thought I had seen a ghost.
You see, because of the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, and my girlfriend KJ being back home, I was homesick. But then, my last two years at UCSC were the best ever. I was finally doing well, and enjoying Santa Cruz. But then, the new Chris Isaak album meant that the door to Santa Cruz was about to shut - forever.
Walking CC2 to her off-campus felt like a death march. We did, however, like Isaak's "Two Hearts." As much as I liked CC2, after graduation, she was going to visit her sister at UC San Diego, and then return to her hometown in China.
Funny thing is, even here in San Francisco, radio stations have never played "Two Hearts" that much.
