A good starting point are the Atlantic records...Giant Steps, MFT, Coltrane Sound, Coltrane Plays The Blues, Ole...Dont over look the excellent Presige recordings as well Soultrane, Tranein In, Cattin w/ Quinichette, etc...Blue Train on Blue Note is a classic. The earlier Impulse stuff w/ the quartet is fantastic. A Love Supreme is transcendent..From about '64/'65 on, Trane becomes an aquired taste and looses a lot of listeners...I find the freer stuff fascinating, but to each his own...Coltrane is fascinating to listen to, esp. his progression...Oh yes, rush out to buy Miles "Kind of Blue" if you havent done so already...a modern jazz touchstone...
