If you're looking for the canon of classics, you can read annotated recommendations of their pick of the 100(?) basic jazz LPs and listen to excerpts here:

I also listen to a lot of world music but don't know of any lists. A couple of recent faves that jump to mind are the groups Radio Tarifa, Surinder Sandhu, and Oumou Sangare. If you are into streaming radio over the internet check out KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" show, always something interesting going on there.
