I first heard 'Bluefunk is a fact' about 20 years ago. I'm not a big fan of Jazz or Funk and certainly not Jazz-Funk but you just had to love the combination of slappy bass and incredible acoustic geetar skills with jivin' cryptic and / or nonsensical lyrics. I loved it then and I still think it's pretty darn cool - the worst you could say is that sometimes it trades simplicity in favour of musical prowess - but this is perhaps an accusation that can be levelled at the genre as a whole.
So it was with great dissapointment that I listened to the latest offering from the ex- paris metro busker - 'Nigerian Wood'.
In short, it's a load of rubbish. Gone are the slappy bass, the incredible guitar skills and the simple arrangements (simply recorded) with skatty lyrics. Instead, you have lots & lots of instruments performing songs which are lacklustre and lyrics which are pregnant with political message, laboriously expressed. To add to the misery, it sounds as if the thing was recorded entirely with a PC.
Avoid at all costs.
