Over a period of 15 to 20 years I attended multiple shows - CES Vegas, THE Show, Stereophile, etc. I found two good reasons for attending.
One was to see components I'd heard/read about or to see new products.
The second, and most rewarding, was to meet and talk with manufacturers and designers, reviewers, and like-minded hobbyists. That was where I learned the most and even made a few friends.
Plus in early years most software (LPs) were offered at nice discounts. However as the revived interest in analog increased that opportunity seemed to disappear.
Least rewarding were the demos. Many played at excessive levels I was not comfortable with, played music I was not familiar with, or simply didn't care for. Too often an exhibitor or visitors would stand in front of the speakers to carry on discussions. Also I was surprised how frequently an exhibitor would make excuses for poor sound saying, "Well, X is not broken in yet."
Most hotel room of course provided little help with good sonics. And I felt sorry for exhibitors who had someone next door or above them with over enthusiastic demos of subwoofers.
In spite of that I occasionally found a demo that was enjoyable and/or impressive. But since I never developed the ability to sonically isolate one component out of a system (unless I was already familiar with everything else), I could not draw many conclusions about a single component. Only that in that system they "did no harm".
Still, they were fun overall, which was why I continued for so many years.
