In the Bad Old Days of Renaissance Italy (e.g., Borgias & Co.), a "Credenza" was a sideboard where the Food Tasters (the poor batards) would taste the food that was about to be put before the Worthies, in an effort to screen for poisons.
The credenza was where the "Credence" or trust or belief that the food was safe, was established.
