In the days of recording tape, there was an effect called "print through" which was when a loud passage was recorded, that if the tape one layer above and below was very quiet, that the loud passage's strong magnetism, could also imprint on the adjacent layer during storage.
IF i remember correctly (and might be the opposite), recordings were to be stored "tails out" so that the tape would be re-wound to be played minimizing this effect..
Also while not the norm, even large scale recordings were sometimes made on bulk erased tape not new tape. Sometimes this was used as an effect too, sort of a pre-echo to the actual event. I think it was whole lot of love was the first one i remember.
