Multichannel and quad

12.77.23.40

Anything a stereo can do, a multichannel system can do better! Where does this notion that the only legitimate way to enjoy music is in a concert hall and that is what must be replicated? Nonsense! Most music is recorded in studios, and might not even be all recorded at the same time! I love the "middle of the band" experience. I have no need to replicate the sound of some concert hall with bad acoustics. why would I want to do that? Multichannel is good for music, it's good for movies, and it will do stereo also, just as good as stereo gear. Well you say, there are no $10,000 reference DVD Audio players to keep the standards up. If it catches on, there will be. Quad failed because of technical problems and there were too many fake products on the market. The technical problems were solved pretty much after quad "died". Not many people actually heard quad in it's full glory.
I recently threw an outdoor party with a reel to reel playing nothing but quad and stereo synthesized into quad using an Audionics Space and Image Composer (The holy graille of SQ decoders) I put 4 speakers in the yard far enough apart to get most of the crowd in the sweet spot, which admittedly is smaller with quad. The reaction of the crowd was interesting. Most of them didn't know it was quad or for that matter, what quad was, but they knew it sounded great! I got many compliments. These were people that came of age in the seventies. They were very familiar with the songs being played. I will no doubt do this again! Most of the quad recorded material came from CD-4 quadradiscs. There are no doubt some of you on this webpage that would no doubt love multichannel, but are listening to all of these naysayers that listen to a system that was built around the limitations of vinyl. (don't get me wrong, I love vinyl, especially quad vinyl) Go find a DTS system,(they're in all of the hifi stores now) and listen to some DTS CDs. Most of these are quad remasters. You will be amazed! Stereo just can't do what multichannel can do in terms of sonic excitement. And if what you want to do is spend $20,000 on an amplifier, then sell your house and get three! I can't wait for DVD Audio. My only fear is that the music won't be mixed like good quad.
