None of the dealers in my area carry stuff I'm truly interested in, so I have to rely on out-of-state dealers sending me stuff for demo. Most of the ones I talked to are pretty reluctant unless they know you have deep pockets or are almost guaranteed to buy. Auditioning cables is a snap for me, but anything bigger than that is generally a hassle.
