Because it too often denigrates the importance of the amplifier, CDP, (somewhat cables), and room.We listen to entire systems. And, although there are "giant killers" out there, - SOTA, or near SOTA, CDPs and amps make a great difference in how the speaker sounds. Yes, - especially high end, - amplifiers sound dramatically different. Compare the top of line Dartzeel with the top of the line Halcro, with the top of the line VTL, and even my old aunty will hear substantial differences.
It certainly is possible to build a system that has a wonderful gestalt with different price class components, - but it is more likely that the pricing of components will be close together. Every component has its strengths and weaknesses. The trick is to find the group of components that work together to mitigate each ones weaknesses and support each others strengths; that match up with your unique aesthetic tastes, room, and budget...
Enjoy the journey.
