Apple dropped DRM and offered (for a price) to convert any previous DRMed tracks to non-DRM early in '09.

With regards to 24/96 material, I anticipate the record labels will eventually try to do what many large businesses do--attempt market segmentation and therefore charge more for something with a perceived higher value (in this case, higher res material for those willing to pay for it). Offering 24/96 content probably doesn't mean squat in terms of additional piracy, but would allow them to make more money on those willing to pay for it. If that market is worthwhile enough to pursue--especially for the large labels--is the question.
