RE: Picking a .01uf or a .1uf as a bypass for dig chips?

In general, film caps are a poor choice for bypasses in a digital system. Usually .1u X7R's are a good choice and can be paralleled by .01 and .001 to stagger the resonances.

If you determined to use film caps at least use stacked film.

I can't speak to your particular application, just in general...
