My krell cd player seems to be dying - it has developed a reading problem the last few days. Rather than getting it serviced for around $600, I'd prefer to spend the money on another CD player.

One option is the Ayre USB DAC - they're $2,500, I've heard it, it sounded quite good.

I may not like to spend that much, at least short term. Other USB options are the wavelength proton and brick, $900 and $1,750.

Another approach I would be happy with is spending $1,000, more or less, on a decent used cd player. Of course, if it's cheaper, it's that much better!

My priorities - smooth top end, musicality, bass.

My system - Thiel 1.6, Spectral DMC 15 preamp, golden tube se40 power amp, MIT cabling. The player that's on the blink is the Krell KAV 300.
