I though that Audio Asylumers should know about this great, cheap machine that some UK audiophiles are raving about. I don't remember it was mentioned here.It is a basically heavilly modded early 90s classic - Arcam Alpham 5 based on TD 1541 chip and CDM 9.44 transport. Avondale tunes it and converts it into NOS operation. The result is extremely pleasant, musical sound with a strong analogue feel you seldomly find with a digital gear of this price range. It has an excellent timing and rhythm, it really makes you dance. If you have a donor player this will set you 350 GBP, if not a complete machine is 500 GBP. Although this is a price range of Rega Apollo, I believe this is a better machine in terms of musicality and emotion. It doesn't perform a usual portion of hi-fi pyrotechnics and it is not the most detailed one, but it has a quality seldomly found in CDPs even of a higher price: it doesn't stand in the way of music, you stop noticing your gear.
We've had a test of it against Naim CDX (not CDX2) and it performed more involving and definitely more musical, approved by the panel of 4 non affiliated audiophiles. It has a slightly rolled off HFs that produce a bit of a dark sounding nature so it is not really for any transparency or detail freaks but its musicality and organicness is second to none in the price range.
