I read this article previously. It added to my general confusion over which approach to pursue. It is clearly a kudo for the upsampling approach and for Monarchy, a well respected company, but it is also clearly one vote one way. It did cause me to question the 154X approaches, but it didn't help my decision, since what it recommends is way way out of my price range. This is not a popularity contest, for sure. And I am not qualified to understand fully all the mathematical distinctions. Yes, I do know enough to get the gist of it, but this doesn't really answer the question at hand.
What is likely to sound best in systems like my own and not cost more than is possible for me to afford, nor require me to solder chips to a PCB?
That's where I'd like the help from those who have actually researched with their ears as well as their calculators.
Here's a real world marketing issue, and I can see that I'm far from alone in this: an upgrade path by pieces that cost less than $300 each. Look at what Audio Alchemy used to do with that, what Musical Fidelity does (but above entry level prices unfortunately), and what Entech seems to be targeting in their future.
My pocket is bare most times. Each year I could take a jump in the $2-300 range, not above that. So if I could add one step and a significant improvement each year at that price I could go on for many years of pleasure and anticipation. If I cannot, because this hobby is marketed way over my head, then I'm stuck.
And I keep seeing these same queries coming from the same pigeonhole on this and other boards. It's not a matter of having a tin ear or lack of appreciation, it's a matter of real world economic scale for ordinary people.
