All I know is that I've heard superb replay from CD using conventional transport/DAC combinations and have never heard anything but very good replay using PCs or hard-drives.
If people are prepared to put up with 'very good' replay then PCs are fine, but IMO they don't cut the mustard when compared to the better CD players or transport/DAC combos.
