Yes, if you are prepared to work at it and understanf thoroughly the hardware and software needed. It has taken me 3 years and a journey thru' various sound cards and computer hardware.I now have a silent system based on a Pentium M745 - anything less powerful and you may have problems with hirez especially if you upsample. Totally fanless feeding a Lynx AES16 into dCS972/954. The sound is as good as the Krell 20i or Sony SCD7777ES modified.
However, the hardware is not perfect as the HD still has some residual vibration and needs a screen to operate. However, integration with my Plasma (another reason for the Pentium M) has been excellent.
Don't believe what you read without verification; the best software is free software, and don't buy into media centre type of software and hardware - from an audiophile viewpoint, these are superfluous. Instead go for the ability to rip and play 25/96/176.4/192k wave or aiff files, nocompression. You can even get modified universal players to rip sacd at 88.2k or 176.4k into your computer!!
