It passes all the info from the source, and creates a large image, but without any musicality - fair enough, it's only $300 thoughI'm spinning my turntable into the DEQ2496 at 24/96 (actually the turntable goes to my Alesis digital recorder which samples at 24/96, passing the digital signal the the DEQ) - and it DOES pass all the info, and it DOES create a large image - but retains all the musicality of the vinyl - hey now, that IS what I'm looking for!
I can send my turntable direct to my preamp to compare, but of course it's such a muddled bass mess without room EQ that I really can't compare. It sounds like it might be better direct - it certainly should be - but the Behringer retains a lot of the vinyl-ity for $300 - considering the DAC is really free in the bargain and the digital EQ functionality alone is a steal at $300 for those who need it - my room certainly does!
I'll have to burn some of my favorite albums to the Alesis disk, then put it on my PC to play back with my much better USB dac and see if it improves with a different dac - but I'm enjoying spinning records enough that I haven't bothered just yet. I'm going to try and attach a Quad 99 CDP-2 onto the end of the Behringer when it arrives (weeks yet probably) and see if that improves things - should be fun.
