Hi,In my oppinion, the best transport is no transport. I recently moved to external HDD digital player that is able to function as a standalone machine to play music/digital pictures/DVD movies though I only used it for audio purpose. It comes with remote control as well.
My comparision shows that with my music ripped from CD using Exact Copy ( will make sure no lost bits during copy by multiple reading and verifying ) to WAV so there is no compression technique being employed like mp3,wma and all those thrashy lossy audio stuff.
Then with the music played back in better quality digital signal, I have tried the direct analog outoput ( internal DAC ) and the performance that I get is much better than CD. The top end and bottom end is well defined. Soundstage is very spot on. I remember testing this with some sets that is known to have bad soundstage, and the result is very surprising. It makes music very musical ( I don not know how to describe it )
Finally, I used the spdif out on my non-OS DAC with tube output stage (diy), well with this the 3D imaging is just magical!
Well, with so many of this kind of products on the market already and you could use up to 300GB of storage, practically all the CD titles will be able to get into it..
I shall not give the product name as I am not doing promotion here but just a sharing on what I experience recently.
Hope this is part of your consideration... as I think no transport is best transport... perhaps I am wrong... who knows.
