I'd suggest you buy the best TEAC VRDS based player/transport you can afford, and have the power supply and clock upgraded as funds allow.

From what I've heard and read from those far more knowledgeable than myself, TEAC provide full parts and support for their transports which is where the likes of Philips fall down, and the VRDS mechanisms are the very best CD transports available which add a certain weight and presence missing from modern offerings apart from TEAC's latest of course.

For $2,000 I'm sure you could find something like a used TEAC VRDS 25 on Audiogon/Ebay and still have enough left to update it.
